The History of Cardinal Football at Stanford Stadium

With the College Football Season around the corner, the Stanford Cardinal are ready for kick-off! The men in Red and White have been playing at Stanford Stadium since the early-1920’s. Speaking of Stanford Stadium, the venue can hold at least 50,000 fans in attendance. The Cardinal’s football venue is about a 40-50 minute drive from San Francisco (home of the MLB’s Giants and NBA’s Warriors). Stanford Stadium is also located on the Stanford University campus. The school’s football stadium hosted Super Bowl XIX in early 1985 (49ers vs. Dolphins).

Since its opening, the Cardinal football venue has witnessed some of the greatest college football players and coaches in history. Those players are the following: David Shaw (head coach), QB Jim Plunkett (Heisman Winner), John Elway, Andrew Luck, S John Lynch, G Joshua Garnett, Tyrone Willingham (head coach), and many more! The men in Red and White last won a National Championship in 1940. Recently, the Cardinal won the Pac-12 Conference Title in 2015. Since 1999, Stanford has played in six New Year’s Bowl Games (including the 2016 Rose Bowl victory vs. Iowa).
